Challenge - Customization and Change Management
In June 2000, Commerce One Auction Services asked Techlogix to help develop a solution for two related business problems: The difficulty in creating customized versions of Commerce One Auction sites was hampering their speed of deployment. A solution which allowed customization without deep knowledge of the inner workings of the Auction site source code was required. As a customized site was rolled out, patches to the underlying source code became very difficult. As the core code base was upgraded and evolved, customizations had to be re-implemented.
Solution - Auction Studio
Techlogix delivered Auction Studio: an enhancement of Microsoft Visual Interdev. Based on a "select-the-options" visual paradigm, Auction Studio allowed professional services engineers and end users to specify how the site should be customized. Subsequently, Auction Studio generated the appropriately modified source code. By generating the source code from a central repository, Auction Studio was also able to handle code updates. Any patched code was integrated into the repository and the new source code was simply re-generated from the repository.
